Cost of Living in Lake Charles, Louisiana

Family-friendly and affordable living.

Spanning five parishes, the low cost of living in Lake Charles and its surrounding region is just one reason why area residents enjoy life in South Louisiana.

Home to a thriving economy, Lake Charles is both a great place to work and live affordably. In 2017, the Council for Community and Economic Research ranked the cost of living in Lake Charles well below the national average in its quarterly index with a total composite score of 93.6 — more affordable than cities such as Dallas, Houston and Beaumont.

In 2013, the American Press referred to Lake Charles as a city that is “setting the pace for other cities.” Similar to the area’s total composite score for cost of living, housing prices also rank well below the national average and lower than nearby cities such as Beaumont and Houston.

Residents of Southwest Louisiana enjoy some of the nation’s lowest property taxes, which benefit potential homebuyers in the region. In addition, the region is a hub for natural gas, which contributes toward utility costs that rank lower than cities such as Dallas and Mobile. Southwest Louisiana is also a key contributor to Louisiana’s thriving energy sector, helping to ensure gas and fuel costs remain low while outperforming those in other southern U.S. cities such as Atlanta and Savannah.

Most impressively, the costs of every day essentials are less in Lake Charles than in dozens of other large southern cities and help further validate why more and more residents continue to choose Southwest Louisiana as their next home.
